TRL, MRL, IRL, IP Commercialization and Technology Transfer
On February 27, 2026, under the Institute Innovation Cell (IIC), in association with the IEEE SB-SIT, the Department of Information Science and Engineering (ISE) and the Department of Computer Science and Design (CSD), Srinivas Institute of Technology organized an expert talk titled βTRL, MRL, IRL, IP Commercialization and Technology Transfer.β
The session was delivered by Mrs. Archana D, Team Lead and Ex-Employee of Accenture, for the students of the ISE and CSD departments. The talk aimed to create awareness about the innovation lifecycle and the structured pathways through which research ideas are transformed into market-ready products and successful ventures.
She explained the concepts of Technology Readiness Levels (TRL), Manufacturing Readiness Levels (MRL), and Innovation Readiness Levels (IRL) in a practical and simplified manner. She highlighted how TRL assesses the maturity of a technology, MRL evaluates manufacturing preparedness, and IRL measures the overall readiness of innovation for commercialization. The session helped students understand how research progresses from laboratory validation to real-world implementation.
Mrs. Archana D also elaborated on Intellectual Property (IP), discussing patents, copyrights, trademarks, and design rights as essential tools for protecting innovations. She emphasized the strategic importance of IP in gaining competitive advantage, attracting investment, and ensuring sustainable growth.
The discussion on Technology Transfer focused on effectively moving academic research into industry applications through collaboration, proper documentation, prototyping, and funding support. The interactive session encouraged students to think beyond technical development and consider scalability, market potential, and commercialization opportunities.
The program received strong support from Dr. Shrinivasa Mayya D, Principal, and Prof. Sudarshan K, Head of the Department, ISE and CSD, whose guidance ensured the successful organization of the event. The program was effectively coordinated by Dr. Praveen Shenoy, IIC Coordinator, along with Prof. Aparna N and Prof. Sahana B, Staff Coordinators, and Prof. Sowmya, Staff Advisor.
Overall, the session served as an informative and inspiring platform that provided students with a comprehensive understanding of readiness levels, intellectual property management, commercialization strategies, and technology transfer mechanisms. It strengthened their awareness of innovation-driven development and encouraged them to align their academic projects with industry and entrepreneurial opportunities.
