The Department of Marine Engineering, Srinivas Institute of Technology, organized a workshop on “Prototyping and Model Making of Ship’s Engine Room” in association with AIMES and IIC. The program was conducted on 7th April 2026.

The workshop was organized with the objective of helping students understand the basics of prototype development, scale modelling, marine structure visualization, and ship engine room layout representation. The program aimed to give students a practical understanding of how shipboard spaces, especially the engine room, can be visualized and represented through small-scale physical models.

The resource person for the workshop was Mr. Sudhir Dhareshwar, Retd. Commodore, Indian Navy, Former Marine Faculty, Great Eastern Maritime Institute. With his experience in the naval and maritime field, he guided the students on the importance of model making in marine engineering and explained how scale models help students understand the arrangement, spacing, and functional layout of machinery and structures inside a ship’s engine room.

During the session, the resource person explained the fundamentals of prototyping, scaling, proportion, layout planning, and structural representation. He brought the required materials for the hands-on activity and demonstrated how simple materials can be used effectively to create meaningful engineering models. The students were taught how to observe a ship’s engine room from a design perspective and how a naval architect visualizes spaces, machinery arrangement, accessibility, and operational layout while planning marine structures.

The event was coordinated by Mr. Vivek V Kumar, Event Coordinator and AIMES Coordinator. The program was supported by Dr. Praveen Shenoy, IIC Coordinator. The workshop was conducted with the support and guidance of Dr. Lokesh V, HOD, Department of Marine Engineering, and under the encouragement of Dr. Shrinivasa Mayya D, Principal, Srinivas Institute of Technology.
