Idea to Industry: A Strategic Roadmap for Commercialisation
The program “Idea to Industry: A Strategic Roadmap for Commercialization” was delivered by Prof. Vivek Vijaykumar, Assistant Professor, to first-year students with the aim of introducing them to the complete journey of transforming an idea into a market-ready product.
The session began with an explanation of Technology Readiness Level (TRL), which helps assess the maturity of a technology—from a basic concept to a fully proven system. This was followed by Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL), emphasizing the preparedness of processes, materials, and production systems for large-scale manufacturing. Prof. Vivek then discussed Innovation Readiness Level (IRL), highlighting how well an idea aligns with market needs, user acceptance, and business feasibility.
An important part of the talk focused on Intellectual Property (IP), where students learned about patents, copyrights, and trademarks, and why protecting innovations at the right stage is critical. Finally, the concept of Technology Transfer was explained, describing how innovations move from academic institutions to industries through licensing, startups, or collaborations.
Overall, the program motivated first-year students to think innovatively and understand the structured pathway required to convert academic ideas into successful industrial solutions.
The success of this session was made possible due to the continuous support and encouragement of Dr. Shrinivasa Mayya D, Principal of Srinivas Institute of Technology, whose vision promotes a culture of innovation and lifelong learning. Dr. Praveen Shenoy, IIC Coordinator, played a significant role in conducting the event under Institution’s Innovation Council. The event was organized by the under the guidence of Dr.Gopalkrishna Bhat, HOD, Department of Chemistry, and First Year Coordinator.
